This year’s festival season starts with the 13th Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. As April nears its end, thousands of music fans come together to enjoy music at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio (California). Quite a few stars join the fun. Music lovers celebrate with rock, indie, hip hop and electronic music. Of course, the eyes also have their field days with colour and inspiring summer hairdos. See for yourself!

• Coachella is the Woodstock of today’s young people. Of course, love, the peace movement and rock n’ roll will never die but new styles won’t be denied either in 2012. Musicians of all genres share the stage. Electro DJs like David Guetta perform side by side with rock bands like Radiohead and rappers like Snoop Dogg. 43 years after Woodstock, hippies and jazz musicians are still a big part of the scene even without greats like beatnik, poet and singer Janis Joplin and Ravi Shankar. In true Woodstock style, celebrities and young couples dominate the scene. People sleep in tents to stay near the party grounds where for two precious days music is king. Styles and styling come natural in festival heaven: It is casual and reminiscent of the hippie era.

• Festival Hair Styles with Hippie Look

  The mood is happy and enthusiastic, and the days are long and hot. At 32 °C [almost 90 °F] in the shade formal threads are out and hair styles must withstand the late spring heat.   1. Shampoo your hair before working a generous amount of heat protectant through the towel-dry hair.

  2. Pull the hair over a large round brush while blow-drying it.

  3. Use a tail comb to create a middle parting.

  4. Gather the hair on one side of the neck and allow it to fall forward over the shoulder.

  5. Now braid the hair to a loose pigtail. Don’t worry about your braiding skills. The look is supposed to be casual and a bit tousled.

  6. Secure the end of the braid using a scrunchy. You may like to wrap a leather band around the scrunchy for a stylish accent.

  7. Pull a few strands of hair out of the braid on both sides and allow the strands to casually fall into your face.

  Ladies’ rooms are rare at the festival. The following styling tricks work without a mirror and may save you from waiting in line and miss events:

  You may not have the time to shampoo your hair and also attend all the exciting events. Using dry shampoo is a practical alternative. It keeps your hair fresh another day and adds volume to your hair.

  Spraying some hair tonic on your hair on a hot day is a refreshing idea, and the pleasant fragrance is an extra bonus.

  Like the skin, hair also needs to be protected from UV radiation. Wearing a hat protects the hair and the skin from UV damage. Hats also look stylish and fit the festival atmosphere.

AFRO::Big hair hairstyle, featured heavily in Afro American culture, and popular through the 1970s in the United States of America.

Afro textured hair::A typical texture of Black African hair that has not been altered by hot combs, flat irons, or chemicals (by perming, relaxing, or straightening). Each strand of this hair type grows in a tiny spring-like, corkscrew shape. The overall effect is such that, despite relatively fewer actual hair shafts compared to straight hair,^[ this texture appears (and feels) denser than its straight counterparts. Due to this, it is often referred to as "thick", "bushy", or "woolly".

Bangs and Fringes::Hair that is combed to the front of the head and cut at or above the eyebrows.



Bobcut::A classic short hairstyle where the ends are cut just around chin length and aligned close to the facial area. A bowl can also be placed on the top of the head and the remaining part of the head can be shaved very short. This style is most common among women.

Bouffant::A bouffant (pronounced /buːˈfɑːnt/) is a type of hairstyle characterized by hair piled high on the head and hanging down on the sides.

Bun::A women's hairstyle where the hair is pulled into a knot at the back or top of the head. More rarely, it can also consist of a bun at the side of the head or two buns on either side of the head. See also chignon.

Chonmage::A traditional japnese haircut.

Cornrows::A hairstyle originating from Subsaharan Africa and popularized by African Americans where the hair is braided into a series of French braid like locks that appear to cling to the head and travel down to the back of the neck. The hairstyle can be worn by both males and females.

Crewcut::A hairstyle that is commonplace for many people (especially men) in military units across the world.

Dutch Braid::A Dutch braid is a braid that appears to be braided "into" the hair, often described as braided backwards—strands going under instead of over as in a French braid.

Feathered hair::Feathered hair was a hairstyle popular in the 1970s and the early 1980s with men and women, the hair was grown long on both sides (normally covering the ears, although it could be shoulder length) unlayered (although some men with curly hair did have it layered) with either a side or a centre parting.

French twist::A hairstyle where the hair is twisted behind the head into a sort of bun style.

Hime cut::A hairstyle that consists of long straight hair that goes to at least below the shoulder blades with part of it cut to about shoulder length and bangs that go to the eyebrows.

Hi-top fade::The hair is cut short on the sides and is grown long on the top. This style was popular among African-American youth and men in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Liberty spikes::Hair that is grown out long and spiked up usually with a gel.

Odango::A hairstyle where two buns are worn on at either side of the head with the rest of the hair worn down like pigtails. Most well-known example of this style is worn by the title character of the Japanese anime Sailor moon.

Perm::Hair that is chemically treated to retain curl (curly perm) or lie straight (straight perm). New hair is not affected by the chemical treatment and will grow out naturally.

Waves::Short Hair Waves, shortened to just waves, is a very common and sought after hairstyle for African American men that create the appearance of water like waves of the hair.
